10 years ago, at a leadership development programme, I was introduced to the idea of Vision and Purpose. Until that point, I had an understanding that there was definitely something more than a paycheck that drove me at work, but I didn’t have to words to describe it.Ironically, it was this exploration of my Vision and Purpose that led me to understand that I was simply not living my WHY at work, and that my Vision no longer aligned with the work that I did. Working in a context where the organizational purpose doesn’t align with one’s personal vision leads to Cognitive Dissonance, something I only learnt a few years later during with time in Camaren Peter’s beautiful Organizational Leadership and Values class. I am so grateful for my time at the Graduate School of Business - University of Cape Town, for giving me not just the terminology to understand my dilemma, but teaching me how to live, and fiercely guard my WHY. And it was so beautiful to see Catherine Duggan share my journey at the 2023 Annual Alumni Reunion Weekend. Thank you for seeing me 💛Our WHY should be our North Star, in every single things we do, be it our entire career, or even down to attending a single meeting, if it does not align with our why, we will remain detached, and disengaged. But when we find that alignment, we find a activation and passion in the work we do. Thank you YearBeyond, LeadMe Academy, Students for a Better Future , iXperience, Credible Carbon and many many more amazing organizations for allowing me to live my WHY in the world of work.My WHY is to unlock potential, through kindness, conscientiousness, and action, and I choose to live by this vision every single day in a meaningful way. I believe that we all have the potential, sometimes, it just needs a little nudge, a resource, or perhaps even a hype woman! If you are looking to explore your WHY and don’t know how or where to start, Simon Sinek has some beautiful work and resources and has been a personal favourite in this space. I’ll share a video in the comments to get you started!#vision #why #purpose

"This has to be the best kept secret in town!" Meet James Bates - #husband, #father, #grandfather and #student in the UofL B.S. Organizational Leadership degree program. Read about his experience today."I chose the OLL program for two reasons: 1) the #flexibility of the program was paramount to me and, 2) the program seemed tailor-made to my current role as a Training Coordinator for LG&E, in that it covers both #managing and #teaching aspects of business. The B.S. OLL course #content has by far been the most enjoyable part of the program. People are undoubtably a company's biggest asset, and working with them can be both rewarding and challenging at the same time. Delving into the needs and motivations of people, no matter the field of work, should prove to be a huge advantage in achieving a company's goals. I absolutely #recommend this program to everyone! This has to be the best kept secret in town, which really is a shame. I had a million excuses as to why I shouldn't or couldn't do it, and I was wrong about all of them. With a flexible schedule, time to get the work completed and turned in, an incredible support system of Professors and Counselors, a massive knowledge database, combined with the fact that so many companies offer tuition reimbursem*nt, there is absolutely no reason not to invest in yourself and earn your degree."Invest in #you and apply today for the B.S. Organizational Leadership degree aka "the best kept secret in town."Visit https://uofl.me/oll-cehd #studentspotlight #organizationalleadership #applytoday #LEADatUofL

I create inspired, empowered, exceptional teams and leaders

"‘Why are you getting a leadership certificate? You are already a great leader.’" This question was posed to me many times over the last four months as I embarked on the Women in Leadership Certificate Program at the University of Utah. While the sentiment is flattering, it's also a little frightening. When it comes to leadership there is no date when we can put our pencils down and take our thinking caps off. Here are four reasons you should consider leadership training, no matter how good you are. 🔍 Validation:Throughout my career, I've honed my leadership skills through trial, error, and invaluable feedback. However, there's something profoundly empowering about having your leadership style and actions validated by experts. Hearing from professors, armed with research and experience from a myriad of fields, provided an affirming perspective and lifted the weight of uncertainty. Validation by people other than those you work with is a sure way to gain quick confidence. 🌐 Perspective:Leadership is as much about learning from others as personal experience. Engaging with a diverse group of leaders broadened my view, offering insights and solutions to challenges I hadn't considered. It reinforced the notion that learning should be a mind-stretching experience, which is hard to accomplish if you don't engage with people outside of your circle of influence. 🤝 Community:The course I took was designed specifically for Women in Leadership positions, which made the concept of community especially meaningful. Leadership can be an isolating journey for all leaders, especially those in the minority. Connecting with fellow women in leadership roles and esteemed professors enriched my experience and provided what I know will be a long-lasting network of invaluable support and camaraderie.🛠️ Skill Acquisition:The misconception that experience or time negates the need for further skill development is misguided. In a rapidly changing world, leaders must continually evolve and adapt. This program equipped me with a myriad of new skills and innovative approaches while also reshaping my perspective on skills I'd built long ago.As Doris Lessing eloquently said, "That is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life but in a new way." My journey in the Women in Leadership Certificate Program has not only enhanced my skills but has also deepened my understanding of leadership in ways I never imagined. If you want to know about this certificate program or others from the University of Utah, I've provided the link below. Here's to embracing growth, fostering community, and perpetually pursuing excellence in leadership. 🚀 #LeadershipJourney #ContinuousGrowth #WomenInLeadership
