How to Feed Critters
When approaching critters in Dreamlight Valley, you'll have the opportunity to feed them snacks in exchange for Dream Shards (when feeding them their favorite food) and the ability to unlock companions, which are essentially the closest thing to owning your own pet that will follow you as you explore the different locations and realms that the game has to offer.
As you might expect, not every critter is eager for human contact, so to feed every animal, you'll need to plan your approaches strategically, especially since only two variants of each critter will spawn in each location every day. Each critter needs to be approached differently, with how to approach them detailed below.
In addition, every critter in Dreamlight Valley also has their own favorite food that they prefer. When feeding animals these items -- which are found within their respective biomes -- you'll not only complete Foraging Tasks that'll earn you Dreamlight or Mist, but you'll also receive additional rewards in the form of Dream Shards, Motifs, or even Memories.
How to Feed Squirrels Their Favorite Food
- Location: Plaza
- Favorite Food: Peanuts
Found roaming the Plaza, Squirrels are among some of the friendliest critters you'll encounter in Dreamlight Valley. Easily approachable, Squirrels will not run away from you when approached unless they have already been fed within the last 24 hours.

How to Feed Rabbits Their Favorite Food
- Location: Peaceful Meadow
- Favorite Food: Carrots
Rabbits are much more skittish and will continually flee from you when initially approached. However, don't let their antics deter you; and instead, chase them down. As the saying goes, the third time's the charm, as on the third attempt, they'll finally settle down and allow you to interact with them.
If you're looking to complete the "Feed Rabbits Their Favorite Food" task, you'll want to feed them Carrots. Carrots can be purchased from Goofy's stall in Peaceful Meadow or simply grown from seeds you'll receive from removing Night Thorns throughout the Plaza.
How to Feed Sea Turtles Their Favorite Food
- Location: Dazzle Beach
- Favorite Food: Seaweed
Often found swimming along the water's edge at Dazzle Beach, Sea Turtles are especially shy critters that will hide inside their shells when approached. However, when receding into their shell, wait a few moments, and they'll soon emerge, allowing you the opportunity to feed them.
A Sea Turtle's favorite food is Seaweed, which can be found along the shores of Dazzle Beach or beside any water source.
How to Feed Foxes Their Favorite Food
advertisem*nt
- Location: Frosted Heights
- Favorite Food: White Sturgeon
Like Rabbits, Foxes will initially run away from you when first approached. As a result, you'll need to chase these cheeky critters a few times until they eventually stop and allow you to approach them.
Foxes prefer fish as one of their ideal snacks, with the White Sturgeon Fish being their favorite. White Sturgeon can often be fished from the orange/gold fishing spots that appear in Frosted Heights.
How to Feed Raccoons Their Favorite Food
- Location: Forest of Valor
- Favorite Food: Blueberries
Raccoons are skittish critters that will flee from you when approached too quickly. To approach Raccoons correctly, you'll want to only move toward them when they are looking down. They'll quickly scurry away if you move while they are alerted, which is indicated by having their head in the air. Approaching Raccoons isn't easy, so don't be deterred if it takes several attempts before you're successful.
Blueberries are Raccoon's favorite food and can be found on bushes within the Forest of Valor or along Dazzle Beach.
You'll first need to clear the main bridge of tree stumps to reach the Raccoons that roam that Forest of Valor. This can only be done after receiving the Shovel Blade upgrade, which is obtained during the Welcoming Anna Quest that is unlocked via the Frozen Realm.
How to Feed Crocodiles Their Favorite Food
advertisem*nt
- Location: Glade of Trust
- Favorite Food: Lobster
Much like Raccoons, Crocodiles are timid critters that will flee should you approach them too quickly. The key to approaching Crocodiles is to only move towards them when they are looking down. They'll quickly scurry away if you move while they are alerted with their head in the air.
Lobster is the favorite food of Crocodiles, which can be caught when fishing from golden fishing spots in the Glade of Trust.
How to Feed Sunbirds Their Favorite Food
- Location: Sunlit Plateau
- Favorite Food: When it comes to feeding Sundbird's, their favorite food will depend on their wing color. So, here are the favorite foods for all Sunbird variants.
- Emerald Sunbird: Any Green or Yellow Flowers
- Golden Sunbird: Any Orange or Yellow Flowers
- Orchid Sunbird: Any Pink or Purple Flowers
- Red Sunbird: Any Red or Purple Flowers
- Turquoise Sunbird: Any Pink or Green Flowers
Despite their quick speed, Sunbirds are surprisingly friendly critters, so if they haven't already approached you first, chase after them, and they'll eventually stop, allowing you to approach them.

How to Feed Ravens Their Favorite Food
- Location Found: Forgotten Lands
- Favorite Food: Any 5-star Meal
advertisem*nt
Ravens favorite food in Disney Dreamlight Valley is any 5-star Meal. It’s a bit of a pricey requirement to please the Critters but it seems to be the only food that they favor. We fed them Bouillabaisse, Ranch Salad, and Ratatouille, all of which yielded the same result.
Ravens have five different color variations: Blue, Brown, Classic (Black), Red, and White.
When you feed a Raven a 5-star Meal, it will drop a Motif Bag as a reward. This will grant you a random Motif, which are decals that can be used when customizing clothing. If you’re a Disney Dreamlight Valley fashion aficionado, farming Ravens is a solid way to build up your inventory of Motifs.
How to Feed Monkeys Their Favorite Food
- Location Found: Depending on their color variant, monkeys can be found in The Ruins, The Courtyard, The Docks, and The Overlook.
- Favorite Food: Banana Split - 5 Star Meal
- Companion Unlock Time: You will need to feed Monkeys for three days in order to unlock them as a companion.
To approach a Monkey, you must first participate in a game of tag, which will require you to chase after the Monkey several times until it eventually stops and allows you to approach it.
Once a Monkey allows you to approach, you'll have the chance to feed it. Now, while Monkeys will like any 3-star meal or above, their favorite food is the 5-star meal, Banana Split. To unlock a Monkey as a companion, you will need to feed them twice a day, across the span of three days.
When feeding a Monkey its favorite food, there's also a small chance you'll be rewarded with a Memory or Motif reward bag.
To make a Banana Split, you'll need 1 Slush Ice, 1 Banana, 1 Milk, 1 Sugarcane, and 1 Sweet.

Lastly, Monkeys also come in five color variants, which are all found in various locations around Eternity Isle. These colors include Beige, Black and Brown, Black and Gray, Classic Gray, Red and Beige.
How to Feed Cobras Their Favorite Food
- Location Found: Depending on their color variant, Cobras can be found in The Wastes, The Plains, The Borderlands, The Oasis, and The Borderlands.
- Favorite Food: Eggs - Purchased from Remy's Restaurant.
- Companion Unlock Time: You will need to feed Cobras for four days in order to unlock them as a companion.
Much like Racoon's, you'll need to approach Cobras cautiously, as their skittish nature can make them hard to approach them. The key to approaching a Cobra is only to move while its head is down, as each step towards them will cause them to raise their heads in the air. If you move while their head is raised, they'll quickly bolt away, and you'll need to restart the process.
Once you're close enough to a Cobra, you will have the option to feed them. But just be careful not to move. Otherwise, you'll need to regain their trust all over again.
While Cobras will like food items such as Scorpions, their favorite food is Eggs, which is a cheap ingredient that can be purchased from Remy's Restaurant. When feeding a Cobra its favorite food, there's also a small chance you'll be rewarded with a Motif.
At this stage, we are unsure how many days you need to feed a Cobra for it to become a companion. If it's anything like other critters, such as Monkeys, you may need to feed them twice a day for upwards of three days. We'll update this page as soon as we know the exact details!
Lastly, Cobras come in five color variants, which can be found in various locations around Eternity Isle. These colors include Blue and Red Striped, Classic Purple and Red Striped, Green and White Striped, Pink Spotted, and Yellow and Purple Striped.
How to Feed Capybaras Their Favorite Food
- Location Found: Depending on their color variant, Capybaras can be found in The Promenade, The Grove, The Grasslands, and The Lagoon.
- Favorite Food: Cabbage - Purchased from Goofy's Stall in The Grasslands, The Promenade, The Grove, and The Lagoon
- Companion Unlock Time: You will need to feed Capybaras for three days in order to unlock them as a companion.

Unlike other critters, such as Monkeys and Cobras, Capybaras are friendly little creatures that can be approached without any adverse reactions. So, simply approaching a Capybara in any form will allow you the opportunity to feed them.
While Capybaras will like food items such as Yams, their favorite food is actually Cabbages, which is a vegetable that can be purchased at Goofy's Stalls in The Grasslands, The Promenade, The Grove, and The Lagoon. When buying Cabbage Seeds, it's important to note that they take one in-game hour to grow and will only yield one Cabbage per plant.
When feeding a Capybara its favorite food, there's also a small chance you'll be rewarded with a Motif.

How to Get Critter Companions
Obtaining a companion is fairly straightforward, as all you need to do is feed the same critter variant - any food will do - twice.
After feeding a particular critter variant twice, they'll become unlocked via your Collection log. Once unlocked, visit the Wardrobe menu and select Companion. Here, you'll find all the critters available to follow you around.
