Gardening is an activity that involves planting and harvesting crops, and is the main way to acquire vegetables and grains as well as some other crops. Gardening can be accomplished in any biome using the Shovel, Seeds, and the Watering Can. Crops are typically used to cook meals, but may also be eaten alone for Energy, sold for Star Coins, or gifted to Characters. Crops can be the objectives of Dreamlight Duties and Event Duties.

Mechanics[]
In order to garden, the player must have unlocked both the Shovel and the Watering Can by completing The Royal Tools and must have access to Seeds.
To start gardening, the player must create gardening plots by selecting the Shovel and pressing the Use Tool key anywhere on the ground. Any bare terrain is viable for gardening, including dirt, sand, and grass. Once the gardening plots have been created, the player can use them to bring up the Seed interface and select the seed they wish to plant. The interface will not be accessible if there are no available seeds in the player's inventory. If the Interact key is held, the player's character will continue to plant the selected crop in any adjacent plots. Once the seeds have been planted, the player just needs to water the seeds with the Watering Can and wait for the crop(s) to grow.
Note: Some crops take a while and as such may require additional watering over the course of their growth. Rain will also water crops.
Biomes[]
Crops grown in the appropriate Biome will reduce their total grow time by 10%. This is indicated by a small green arrow on the corresponding Seed's icon while the Seed interface is open.
The appropriate Biome for each crop can be viewed below in the List of Crops.
Timed Harvests[]
Occasionally while harvesting crops, the player may trigger a timed event.
A Critical Harvest is a timed event where multiple crops of the kind harvested will pop out into a moderate area. The player must walk over these crops to pick them up. These crops are highlighted with red particles and will vanish after a short time.
A Bountiful Harvest will cause the crop the player has just gathered to glow gold for a short amount of time. During this time frame the player can repeatedly gather from this craft with a significantly shorter animation, allowing the player to rapidly interact with the crop to maximize their harvest.
Rich Soil[]
There is a chance for Rich Soil to appear whenever the player harvests a crop. Rich Soil is used in Crafting and certain quests, such as Nature & Nurture.
Rich Soil will not spawn during a Bountiful Harvest and Companions will not harvest additional Rich Soil.
Companions[]
At Friendship level 2, most Villagers can be assigned Gardening as a Role.
While the player is accompanied by a Gardening Companion, that Companion will receive bonus Friendship whenever the player plants, waters, or harvests any crop.
Additionally, there is a chance for the Companion to harvest additional items every time the Player harvests a crop. This can trigger for every interaction during a Bountiful Harvest.
Obstacles[]
- Main article: Obstacles
The following Obstacles can be cleared by watering.
Mushroom Patches[]
Not to be confused with Mushrooms that are gathered by Foraging, Mushroom Patches are obstacles that appear in the Peaceful Meadow, the Glade of Trust, and the Sunlit Plateau. The Watering Can must be upgraded to be able to clear Small and Large Mushroom Patches by completing A Dark Experiment and The Final Trial, respectively. Watering Mushroom Patches yields Mushrooms.
Goofy's Stalls[]
- Main article: Goofy's Stalls
Both Seeds and Crops can be purchased from Goofy's Stalls. Any given stall will sell the seeds appropriate to its respective biome as well as a rotation of crops and fruits relevant to that biome. For example, the Template:Goofy’s Stall will sell Tomato Seed, Sugarcane Seed, and Corn Seed, as well as rotation of ingredients available from Dazzle Beach, which includes a selection of those crops as well as Coconut, Banana or Blueberry.
